The Appeal: Political Report probes the local politics of mass incarceration and criminal justice reform. Prosecutors, sheriffs, state lawmakers, and other state and local officials wield immense power over the criminal legal system and law enforcement practices. We highlight often-overlooked but highly consequential local elections, political organizing around these issues, legislative developments, and policies and decisions implemented by prosecutors and other local officials. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we also take a broader look at how local politics affect the groups most vulnerable to the virus.
